Welcome
Settled in? Made Friends?
Got Involved? No??? Why not!!! Well we are the answer (we hope!). KCL
Bangladesh Society has been very active this year churning out an
eclectic range of events to suit the varied tastes of all our members -
we think there's been something for all!!
So
what has your King's College Bangladesh Society been up to?
KCL BDS community action
- "Getting into
Medicine" - University Open Day helping children from
disadvantaged communities access Medicine. A roaring success over 150
students attended from across London, all with very positive feedback.
- Health Awareness
Days - Giving students a chance themselves to go out and
promote good health and giving advice within the community; targeting
those issues that affect people of the subcontinent such as Diabetes
and Heart Disease. We held our first Heath Awareness day at the
Elephant and Castle Community Centre, an event led solely by students
at Guy's, which was well-received by over 50 participants.
- Tower Hamlets
Student Mentor scheme and local workshops
- preparing young people to enter higher education, raising aspirations
and cultivating good role models for the wider community. Our members
are currently taking part in the "Food 4 Thought" mentoring programme
which runs in East London.
KCL BDS culture
- Social Events -
KCL BDS held our annual Iftar party at the Clifton, Brick Lane and also
a Ladies Night in conjunction with Arabic Society - both were sold out!
- Media -
Meeting Nobel Prize winner Mohammed Yunus and the High Commissioner of
Bangladesh and interviewed on BBC Asian Network Live.
- Sports -
Various inter-society football tournaments as well as competing with
other ULU teams.
What can members
look forward to?
As
ever we are hoping to continue developing our community programme, so
please join up and offer your services! In the next few weeks our
members can look forward to Bangladesh: Politics Explained (a lecture
looking into the current political turmoil in Bangladesh) and a Charity
Eatathon (KCL BDS looking to crown the King of Big Eaters!). More
social events held by KCL BDS Culture - Shisha Night, Graam Night (get
clothed in your finest longhi and sarees and join us for something a
tad more traditional) and for others looking for something a little
quieter we also have film nights!
We
hope to have our new all singing and all dancing website up very
shortly www.kclbds.co.uk where you can meet and get in contact with
the committee, stay up-to-date with our events and post ideas on our
forum!
We
remain open and welcoming to all regardless of religion or nationality,
and hope that through our events, you will not only get the chance to
meet inspiring people and have a great time but also find opportunities
get hands-on in tackling the issues facing local communities
today.
Much
love,
KCL
